At 4 pm, straight after working at my favorite and supporting bike shop City Bike Depot, I jumped into the car and headed off in the direction Yellomundee for the twilight 4hr enduro race, round one of the WSMTB summer enduro series. My HID technologies light was ready, hammer nutrition food ready, legs ready, head sort off ready, when I arrived I was happy to see how many people turned up. All level riders were there giving the 4hr a go as solo or in teams. Everyone had their own little challenge for the day and I am sure many of them were accomplished. What really made me happy is to see so many girls giving solo a go and many of them stayed on the bike for the whole 4hr which was really inspiring to see. The course designed for the race was a nice flowy track with one challenging climb that drove many riders, including myself, to get off the bike a push it up the rocky hill.
The first two laps were a bit harsh for me as my bike and myself were not really working together and this inevitably resulted in three really lame crashes and some lost skin. You have days like that when your bike and yourself just don’t speak the same language… Anyway after a while I started to understand my bike again and therefore felt better. When the night was not far from arriving, I stopped to put my lights on which took me a wee while as the plug was unplugging itself every time I was putting the helmet on. That was because I did not push the plug in hard enough, my dusty brain understood that eventually and off I went for the fun night laps. I did not really know where I was rank wise and to be really honest I did not really care as it was so much fun. Towards the end of the 4hr my contacts were fuzzy and I could not see as well so on my second to last lap, I stopped and I asked where I was then decided that a last lap would not hurt me and I was just happy to go back there for another lap to secure first position. Also I think it is really rewarding when you start something to finish it properly. I mean you start a 4hr you do a 4hr, then you don’t have any room for “if I would have gone for my last lap I would …” I finished with a smile and 10 laps in my pocket in the solo women category.
All up it was a FANTASTIC event and I would like to thank Blackman Cycles for supporting this event. I also would like to congratulate the 8 solo women who gave this challenging 4hr a go. In the solo women, second place Kate Heynes and third place Stephani Pfaffmann did really well with impressive 9 laps and 8 laps respectively, well done girls! The Solo men were flying around corners and over rocks with leading Andrew Lumley smashing 12 laps, less than 4 min behind Tim Kerle and in third place David Ludenia who had a really consistent race even with a broken chain. In the single speed category the win went to Michael Churchward who put in 10 strong laps. Damien Wood, who strongly turned the lonely gear up the hill, took second place from Sean Couley by just over 1 min at the finish. Well done guys!
Congratulations again to WSMTB and everyone who helped to make this event a BIG success! Riders were just genuinely nice and the vibe was just perfect as always with Western Sydney club races!
